🐄 Farm Animals on the Road - A Safety Reminder for Farmers and Landowners

The Police regularly receives reports of livestock escaping fields and wandering onto main roads across our rural communities. Loose animals can create serious hazards for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, particularly on faster roads where drivers may have little time to react.

We would encourage farmers and landowners to regularly check perimeter fencing and gates for any damage or weaknesses. As we all know, the grass often seems greener on the other side of the fence, and livestock can be very good at finding a way out if an opportunity arises!

Where possible, it would also be helpful for contact details to be displayed on farm gates. This can enable emergency services or members of the public to quickly contact the owner if animals are found loose.

We want our rural communities to feel reassured that road safety remains a priority and that we are working together with farmers and landowners to reduce risks. Preventing livestock from escaping helps protect road users and the welfare of the animals themselves.

If you see livestock loose on a road, please report it as soon as possible. Farmers and landowners are encouraged to check fences and gates regularly and consider displaying contact details where appropriate to assist in an emergency.
